Find a ring fit you can live with

A fit check should include the knuckle, the width of the band and the way your hands move through an ordinary day.

Find a ring fit you can live with

A ring should be comfortable after the first moment you put it on. That sounds obvious, but it is easy to focus on the size label and forget the width of the band, the finger it will be worn on or the other rings around it. A little comparison before buying can make the decision much clearer.

Choose the right reference ring

Use a ring that fits the intended finger, not simply the nearest ring available. Fingers differ between hands, and a ring that works on one may not suit another. Measure the clear internal opening rather than the outside edge of the metal.

Check which sizing system the product uses. Letters, numbers and circumference measurements are not interchangeable without the appropriate chart. Use the chart supplied for that particular product, especially if you are comparing pieces from different ranges. If the measurement is uncertain, a proper sizing check with a jeweller is more reliable than a rough guess from a photograph.

Account for the band

A broad band occupies more of the finger than a narrow one. A group of stacked rings can also feel different from one fine band on its own. Compare a proposed style with a reference of similar width if you can. Do not assume that a familiar label guarantees the same feel in every shape.

An open ring should not automatically be treated as adjustable. Its structure or setting may not be designed for repeated bending. Follow the confirmed instructions and avoid changing its shape by force.

Check movement, not only appearance

When trying a ring, open and close your hand gently and notice the space around neighbouring fingers. The ring needs to pass the knuckle while remaining comfortable in its resting position. Stop if there is painful pressure or difficulty removing it.

Hands can vary during the day and with temperature, so a single hurried measurement can be misleading. Compare at a normal room temperature and repeat the check rather than selecting a tighter size because it looked neat for a moment.

Make gifting less uncertain

If you are choosing a ring for someone else, avoid guessing a size from their height or clothing size. A known ring that fits the correct finger is a better reference. When that is not available, consider another type of jewellery and check its own dimensions instead.
