A jewellery care routine for real life

Make care easy to repeat with a small wearing routine, separate storage and a cautious approach to cleaning products.

A jewellery care routine for real life

Jewellery care works best when it fits into the way you already get ready and put things away. You do not need an elaborate ritual for every piece. You do need to know its construction and avoid assuming that one cleaning method is suitable for everything in the box.

Find the instructions first

Check the base material, surface finish and any stone or decorative element. A gold-coloured surface does not tell you whether a piece is solid metal or plated. A photograph also cannot reveal adhesive settings or delicate coatings. If the product information is incomplete, ask for confirmation before choosing a chemical cleaner.

Keep the care card or save the product instructions somewhere you can find them again. When your jewellery collection includes several finishes, that small habit is more useful than trying to remember one general rule for all of them.

Put jewellery on at the end

Let fragrance, lotions and cosmetics dry before adding jewellery. Take pieces off before activities that expose them to cleaning chemicals, impact or repeated friction unless the product's confirmed instructions explicitly allow that use. A description such as water-resistant should be read with its stated limits; it is not permission to ignore every care recommendation.

After wearing, use a clean, soft cloth gently. Do not scrub a setting or pull a chain tight to remove a knot. If a piece needs more than a light wipe, pause and check the appropriate method for that material.

Give each piece a place

Store necklaces with the clasps closed and without a tight loop. Keep delicate chains away from heavy bangles and textured rings. Small separate pouches or lined compartments make it easier to find a pair of earrings without tipping every piece into one pile.

Let jewellery dry before closing it away. Avoid treating a humid bathroom shelf as permanent storage. When travelling, choose a compact organiser that keeps pieces from rubbing together rather than packing a loose collection in a bag.

Check the small moving parts

Occasionally look at clasps, hinges and backs before wearing a piece. If something has become loose, catches unexpectedly or no longer closes properly, stop and seek suitable repair guidance. Continuing to wear a failing fastening can turn a manageable issue into a lost item.

Do not assume an ultrasonic cleaner, polishing paste or dipping solution is safe for pearls, stones, plating or adhesive settings. Follow the individual instructions rather than a dramatic cleaning tip online.
